There is a simple phrase that keep many talented people from their greatest destiny:
It’s too late.
I had a client (we’ll call Jennifer) about 4 weeks ago who was unhappy with her work and wanted to explore other possibilities. When it became clear what would make her happy, I asked what was blocking her from pursuing it.
“Oh, it’s too late for me,” she responded.
“Really? How old are you?” I queried.
“36,” she answered.
While this may sound ridiculous, Jennifer is not all that unusual. Often what “Too late” really means “I’m frustrated and don’t know how to find my destiny going forward.”
But, truthfully, it’s rarely ever “too late.”
Just for reference, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that at age 60 you begin to reach to top of your potential and that it continues well into your 80’s.
You may be familiar with a woman named Anna Mary Robertson Moses (aka Grandma Moses) who started painting at 76 after arthritis kept her from holding an embroidery needle. Between 76 and 101 she produced over 1, 500 pieces of art and her work has been displayed at the museums all over the world and sold for thousands of dollars. Today, 60 years after her death, she is still considered one of the most prolific artists in recent history.
Famed chef Julia Child didn’t write her first cookbook until her 50’s – she worked in advertising and cooking was a hobby, but guess what her legacy was!
Vera Wang started out as a figure skater, and then she tried her hand at journalism. She didn’t open her first bridal boutique until she was 40, but now she’s famous for her designs.
And, of course, there’s the Colonel!! (Sanders.) This man struggled trying to get someone to buy his chicken recipe and was turned down over 1,000 times! But, at 62, he opened his first franchised KFC – and the rest is history.
So, Jennifer, it’s not too late. We all have a destiny – and it’s never too late to express it.
